ADAPTIVE REUSE

2025

Brian Cleveland Architects’ transformation of the former plumbing supply warehouse on Chestnut Street in New Britain, CT—now known as The Study on Chestnut—is a standout example of adaptive reuse revitalizing an urban core. The project preserves the original red-brick façade, large industrial windows, and timber framing while integrating contemporary upgrades and modern apartment facilities. The design carefully balances historic preservation with modern functionality, creating a vibrant environment that blends residential comfort with commercial vitality. By reusing an existing structure, the project minimizes environmental impact and preserves the neighborhood’s industrial heritage, while offering residents and visitors a dynamic new anchor in the heart of the city.

Inside, exposed brick and beams add character to newly configured residential units, which include studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments. The revitalization of this once abandoned structure now contributes to the growth and reinvigoration of the expanding activity of New Britain’s walkable and transit-connected downtown. The Study on Chestnut demonstrates how thoughtful design can breathe new life into aging infrastructure and support broader urban renewal goals.
